I recently visited Namdaemun Market with my wife on a day that felt like spring had arrived early. With the temperature in Seoul climbing to a balmy 16°C (60.8°F), it was the perfect day to explore one of the city's most iconic landmarks.
📜 A Glimpse into History: 600 Years of Namdaemun
Namdaemun Market is more than just a place to shop; it is a living piece of history. Its roots trace back to 1414 during the reign of King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty.
Following the Imjin War, it became the hub for the nation's logistics and trade. Today, there’s a famous Korean saying that says you can find everything here "except for a cat’s horn." Standing in the shadow of the Sungnyemun Gate (Namdaemun), this market is where Seoul’s rich past meets its energetic present.
📍 Our Route: Starting Near Shinsegae Main Store
While many start their journey from Hoehyeon Station (Line 4), we decided to begin our walk from the side of the Shinsegae Department Store Main Branch (the area marked with a star).

The market was buzzing with crowds taking advantage of the warm weekend. As lunchtime approached, the street food stalls were lined with people looking to satisfy their hunger.
🥢 A Taste of the Market: K-Gimbap
After exploring the vibrant alleys, we worked up quite an appetite. We decided to stop by a local spot called K-Gimbap for a classic meal of Ramyeon and Tuna Gimbap.
- Tuna Gimbap: Packed tight with fresh ingredients, every bite was incredibly flavorful.
- Ramyeon: The noodles were cooked to a perfect al dente, exactly what we needed to recharge.
🌸 Spring is Just Around the Corner
With our stomachs full, we continued to wander through the market. The warm sunlight and the sound of people laughing and chatting made it feel as though spring had truly arrived.
There is something special about the energy of Namdaemun Market—a place where history and modern life coexist so seamlessly. If you’re looking for the true "Seoul Scene," this is exactly where you’ll find it.
